Minerva (Vegetable-Tanned)Updated 4 months ago

Vegetable-tanned leather patinates easier and quicker than chrome - and combination-tanned leather. Because of this, you will want to be careful with what product you use to condition the leather. We recommend starting on the tongue or the heel using a neutral conditioner, i.e., Venetian Leather Balm or Saphir Renovateur. These neutral conditioners will not darken the leather; however, the leather may appear darker after the application but will dry out to the original color. You will quickly notice that your vegetable-tanned leather boots will patina no matter what when exposed to the elements. Indeed, both sunlight and water will darken the leather. This leather will change color over time; there is no way to stop this.

You can use a damp microfiber cloth (or an old 100% cotton t-shirt) to remove dust, dirt, gunk, or other debris from the upper leather. Remember to clean the welts; a damp Q-tip can remove stuck-on grime on the welts. After letting the leather dry, apply a neutral conditioner, e.g., Venetian Leather Balm or Saphir Renovateur. Second, apply an even layer over the uppers (starting at the tongue or the heel) using a new microfiber cloth or an old t-shirt. Give each boot a good few minutes to let the conditioner soak in before you start vigorously brushing the leather for two to three minutes per shoe.
